Business

2002/2003

The Republic of Colombia is a traditional economic partner and simultaneously a very important one of the Czech Republic in Latin America. According to the number of businesses obtained in the commercial exchange and to our exports, Colombia fluctuated in the long term in the 4 th -6 th place in the commerce of the Czech Republic with the countries of this area, occupying in the lapse of 1994 - 1998 reason why reaches number of businesses obtained in the 2nd place in the commercial exchange and in the lapse of 1995 - 1997 were even located in the 2nd place even when it was about the exports (after Brazil). The trade balance accuses during long years passivity for us, which is caused by elevated Czech purchases of bananas and coffee (about 25 million dollars per year). Thanks to the increase of the Czech exports (concretely the Skoda automobiles), in the middle of 90 years the negative balance was reducing. However, since 1997 the sale of automobiles was decreasing (mainly as a result of its competitiveness diminished from the point of view of the prices). This fact, along with the reduction of the banana import, was translated both in a global decrease of the commercial exchange between countries.

The traditional lines of the Czech export were constituted by machinery products. Among them, machines were counted as tools, textile machines for the industry of the tanning, machines for the industry of the leather and machines, tractors, bearings, measurers of electricity, tools and other pieces of machinery. Between the lines different from the machinery the chemical agents found good acceptance in the Colombian market, jewellery imitation, and others, among them Malta, components of hydraulic turbines, oil paintings, drawings and paintings to the pie, etc. Since 1993 the Skoda automobiles had good exit in the Colombian market particularly, nevertheless, because of the crossing of the producer to the manufacture of new Felicie models and Octavie, considerably more expensive, in the second semester of 1998 its export decreased noticeably.
